liamh

Paedsipsam recently caught up with Liam Harrison at a seminar and training session at Bodyworx gym in Aberdeen whilst he was training with Aberdeen Muay Thai.

PSS: Thanks for taking time to speak to us. We’ve heard you’re fighting in a few weeks time, do you have details of your fight?

LH: Hello, yes I’m fighting in 2 weeks on Alex Foreman’s show in Liverpool against tough Italian Calgero Palmeri.

PSS: Do you have any other fights lined up this year?

LH: Yes, I have a 4-man tournament in Japan in October, then the Main Event show in Manchester against Hacine Bennaoiu in November and then a show in Malaysia in December.

PSS: How are you going to prepare for the fights, are you planning o training at Bad Company or heading over to Thailand?

LH: I’ll train for the fights at Bad Company with Richard Smith but for the Malaysia fight I’ll train at JittiGym in Bangkok. It will be too cold to train in the UK in December haha

PSS: Who has been catching your eye recently in the domestic scene in the UK and who has caught your eye fighting in the stadiums in Thailand recently?

LH: Domestically there are some great young talents most notably Daniel McGowan. In the stadiums Yodvicha has been terrorising the top dogs at only 17 years old he’s a monster.

PSS: Is there anyone you’d really like to get matched against soon?

LH: I’m happy to fight anyone really, I’ve been fighting top-level fighters constantly for the last 7 years so will carry on to do so.

Steve Bonner WBC Heavyweight World Champion – Interview

20 Mar

Paedsipsam (PSS): First of all congratulations on the recent WBC heavyweight world title win. How are you feeling after the fight?

Steve Bonner (SB): Hi PSS. Thanks very much. I dont think it has quite sunk in that I’m the WBC world champion yet. My body feels good after this fight and I will be straight back into training.

PSS: When did you start training martial arts? You made the transition from Kickboxing to Muay Thai? How did you find the change of styles?

SB: I started training in martial arts about 10 years ago. I started with tae kwon do but that just wasn’t real enough. A friend of mine instructed a kickboxing class in Aberdeen so I went along and loved it. I started fighting about 6 months later. The transition between Kickboxing and Muay Thai was interesting for me. I had to change most of what I already knew. I really enjoyed learning all the new skills involved.

PSS: How do you find training at Phon’s gym in Australia, any plans to train anywhere else?

SB: When I first started at Phon’s he told me we would win professional titles and travel the world. I’ve now had 6 fights through phon’s, 5 of these fights where for titles, 2 of them for world titles. The one fight that wasn’t for a title was in the K1. I’m not planning on moving gyms any time soon. As for the training, it’s the hardest I’ve ever trained. before fights we will train for 4 hours a night and run 8 – 10 kms a day.

PSS: What’s been the key attributes you’ve learned from Muay Thai?

SB: I’ve learned so much through Muay Thai. I would say one of the key attributes I love about Muay Thai is the respect that is normally shown between fighters. Some of my good friends are guys I’ve punched on with in the ring.

PSS: So where do you see yourself going from here? You’ve already won a national championship and now a world championship? Any fights you’d like to be made?

SB: I want to be fighting the biggest names in the world on the biggest shows in the world. There is a possibility I might get to fight in the Thai Fight Tournament in Thailand in December so that would be an amazing opportunity.

PSS: Who are you’re inspirational characters in the sport?

SB: One person that has inspired me from the start is my old coach from Aberdeen Albert Ross. Albert really helped me in my early fighting career and still supports me to this day. As for fighters that have inspired me, I always liked watching Jerome Le Banner who is a massive guy with so much power but lots of speed as well.

PSS: Being a pro fighter, what’s the biggest hurdles for you at the moment?

SB: I know this has been brought up so many times before but the biggest hurdle for myself is not getting paid enough for fights. Most professional Muay Thai and Kickboxing fighters have to work a normal job then train for hours after work. This is very draining for a fighter. It is very demanding to balance a job and fighting at the same time.

For updates on my fighting and training please like my Facebook page which is, The Colossus Steve Bonner.

I would Like to thank my sponsors from my last fight, Neptune, Quest4Fitness, ICP Security and The BadPiper.

I would like to dedicate this last fight to my friend and previous opponent Eduardo Maiorino de Morais who sadly passed away before Christmas last year.

Paedsipsam would like to say a huge thank you for Steve for his time.
